Two of Selwyn’s sentences impressed me today: ‘A name in Scripture does more than identify someone; it tells of what kind of person they are – their character, their essential nature.’ and, ” God’s revelation of Himself through His names had limitations. When Jesus came, however, He was able to reveal through His life and works the nature of God in a way that no name could possibly do.”
Notice that God’s name in the Old Testament emphasises a number of important aspects. A primary point is that He is, the one and only God – the God most high (El – Elyon). Another important is that He is the God who provides nourishment; El – Shaddai (The Nourisher of His people) and Jehovah – Jirch (The Lord provides).
These same characteristics are seen in Jesus’ life and works – do you agree?
