Overcoming power

One aspect which struck me, was the main verse for today (Acts 19:17); ‘ … they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus, was held in high honour.’

Today, is the name of our Lord Jesus, held in high honour within our general community?

Selwyn states: ‘As a result of what happened to the sons of Sceva (Acts 19:13-16), who used Christ’s name without His authority, the whole community was seized with fear, and a great spiritual move took place. Believers confessed their former, and apparently their continued, performance of magical practices.

The evidence that God’s power was at work in the Early Church overcoming every power set against Him, clearly contributed to a sense of the numinous (sensing the presence of divinity). How desperately we need that same power to be at work in our churches today.’

Is it, that the sense of Jesus’ divinity has been dulled to the point, where we limit His power within the Church – what do you think?
