Selwyn must have felt strongly about his fifth conviction; ‘deep spiritual change comes not so much from the outside in, but from the inside out’, for, as we see, he spends a few days describing exactly what he means.

Today, he says: “What I am trying to spell out is this: often it is easier to concentrate on doing the correct things – giving the right performance – than facing the troubling things that may be going on inside us. Jumping through spiritual hoops can sometimes be more appealing than pausing to reflect on what may be going on in our soul. …

There are far too m any people in our churches who, in their behaviour, ‘play to the gallery’. The cup looks clean on the outside, but inside it is deeply stained.”

As I said before – for me God is the only one who can change us from the inside out – that is, if we invite Him in, to do the clean-up!
