Selwyn continues to discuss; ‘the thought that when we ask God for Hs help or guidance over a certain matter, we must be prepared for Him to respond in ways we do not expect.’

He goes on further to say: “There are many … gifted men and women who have also given up personal ambitions, and potentially successful careers, to follow God’s calling for their lives (to become an evangelist to proclaim the gospel, I think is what is implied by Selwyn). …  some might go so far as to accuse God of being inconsiderate or even unjust, (but) … I know enough about God … to be certain that He always gives the best to those who leave the choice to Him.”

I think the prayer for today brings this particular issue into clearer focus: “O God, help me see that whatever sacrifices I am called to make in Your service, they are nothing compared to the sacrifice that You made for me (on the cross). In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

If we accept and understand the depth of Jesus’ love for us – the love He has already demonstrated on the cross – then we can continue to fully trust in His love and He will always be there for us, even during the worst storms of life. We can either grow to enjoy the relationship He is offering or we can ignore His call to follow Him and battle on by ourselves.

I like the main reading for today, 1 Corinthians 2:1-16; Paul’s words are helpful to all those who are not gifted public speakers because what Paul writes tells us that when we proclaim the gospel we are given the necessary words by the Holy Spirit. The first five verses are worth repeating here: “When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testmony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.”

The theme is continued and well covered in verses 13 & 14: “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. Those without the Spirit (those who do not follow Jesus) do not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for these words are foolishness to them, and they cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

So, when next you can -simply proclaim the Gospel and let God’s power work through you – what do you think?
