Selwyn continues to talk about the great surprise of God – the fact that He became flesh.
He says; ‘All other (non-Christian) faiths claim that God has spoken to their founder, and to prove it they show us their books. … Every other religion is humanity’s attempt to climb to God; Jesus is God’s descent to humanity. Every other religion represents humanity’s search for God; Jesus, the Word become flesh, represents God’s search for men and women. … Jesus did not bring a religion to be set alongside other religions – something a little better, a little more moral, a little more spiritual. …
As the Son of Man He confronts the sons of men with God’s offer to humankind. He Himself is the offer. Please note that, as it is supremely important. The gospel lies in His Person – He is the good news. He came that we might have a gospel to preach.’ … “Jesus is good news ; all else is good views.”
In John 14:6-7 we have an amazing statement made by Jesus: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
In addition, the following verses from John 3:13-15; “No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven – the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up (on a cross) that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.”
A human prophet could never honestly say these words – only someone who came from heaven and who could also promise eternal life – what other interpretation could there be?
