I don’t have much to add to today’s study – it’s fairly clear that Jesus did not use his divine power to reduce the pain of the cross.

As Selwyn says: “Our Lord certainly felt extreme pain – felt it keenly and sharply as any other human being. His body screamed out in the same way yours and mine would when torn and severed. … The cross opens wide appealing arms to all who are racked by pain. It says, ‘Draw near. Your Savior has worn your flesh, measured its frality, felt its pain and knows exactly how you feel.’”

And as the letter of Hebrews tells us: we have a perfect High Priest in Jesus who is able to sympathise with all our weaknesses.

Jesus is the perfection of the former covenant: He is the perfect Temple – the perfect High Priest – the perfect sacrifice (the perfect pascal lamb) – paid the perfect ransom – is the perfect King of the City of Peace – our perfect God!
