In Nehemiah 11:1-19, we read about the migration of some of the people from towns and villages around Jerusalem to the city, so that it could be maintained and also protect it from attack.
Selwyn draws our attention to the fact that it appears that this influx of new people occurred without creating serious, on-going problems for the city’s existing population.
He says: ” … we must remember that the city under Nehemiah was established upon sound biblical principles, and they were in the midst of spiritual renewal. This does not mean they had no relational problems, but because of their deep commitment to spiritual things they had the will to work through them. ‘Where there’s a will there’ a way’, it is sometimes said. Where there is God’s will there is certainly always a way.”
The prayer for today, also contains a point worth remembering – God never asks us to do anything which we cannot complete – He will always provide the means if we step out in faith. Do you agree?
The prayer: “Father, I recognise that You not only call me to do Your will but provide me with the strength to accomplish it. You ask me to do nothing of which I am not capable – providing I respond to Your power. May I always do so. Amen.”
