Now, Selwyn takes back to Colossians, and we are looking at Chapter 2, verse 3 (NIV): “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Selwyn emphasises an important point, in regard to: “The point Paul has been making is that no essential truths are withheld from anyone who belongs to Jesus Christ.” It’s also a fact that God reveals wisdom and knowledge at the most appropriate times – as we mature in our faith and our love deepens for Jesus, then Jesus unfolds a better understanding of His plans for us. As Selwyn observes: “You know and you don’t know; you see and don’t see. But what you don’t know and don’t see spurs you on to further discovery.” Of course, those you don’t have a relationship with God have no idea about the nature of this unfolding of spiritual knowledge – this area may appear as a form of nonsense to them!

In his conclusion, Selwyn states: “The more we know of Christ the more we want to know, and this discovery will go on for ever.”

As Selwyn mentions today, reading the Bible on a regular basis opens up for us a field of perpetual discovery – many times this year I’ve been reading verses, which I’ve read many times before; when a new appreciation of their meaning flooded into my mind and heart. Like Selwyn, the thrill of these discoveries keeps us keen to read and search the Scriptures for these certain treasures.

In summary, the important essential truths become part of us at the time, we first open our heart to Jesus. The unfolding revelation of Christ that we receive at different times in our spiritual journey expands and never contradicts the basic truths. Nothing is revealed that contradicts Scripture or adds to that which is found in the Bible, from the Book of Genesis all the way to the end of the book of Revelation. There are no new and different revelations; likewise, there are no prophets after Jesus who have been given authority to add anything to what Jesus revealed!
