Shadow-lands

These are the next couple of verses in Colossians set for reading and meditation (2:16-17, NIV): “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”

As Selwyn says, in today’s study: “The Jewish rituals, as prescribed in the Old Testament were to be kept, but they were just shadows of what was to come. Their true value lay not in what they were but what they pointed to. Christ is the fulfilment of all that the Old Testament prefigured (spoke about), and in Him is found all spiritual reality. Those who depend on rituals and ceremonies for their salvation are living in the shadows. Christ is all that is needed. ALL.”

It’s difficult to understand why some people want to return to the old ritual ways of the Old Testament – all the requirements of the law are found in Jesus. It’s Jesus in us, with His laws written on our hearts that demands our full attention – we cannot afford to have our scare time wasted on useless rituals and ceremonies.

Those people who seek these rituals because they see them as a essential requirement for salvation; clearly don’t have a relationship with God. What do you think?
