Selwyn introduces today’s study with: “It’s astonishing the effect that words can have upon you.”
I tend to think that different words can be powerful, at different times, in our lives. But I liked the following: “Someone has compiled a list of the most powerful words in the English language: ‘The bitterest word – alone. The most revered word – mother. The most feared word – death. The coldest word – no. The warmest word – friend.’ What, I wonder, is the most powerful word you have ever come across?”
Well, I don’t know about you, but I can think of two words missing from the above list: ‘love’ and ‘hate’. It has been my experience that the feelings generated by the words: ‘I love you’ or ‘I hate you’, have stayed with me, all through my life. In summary, how must God feel when He offers, his outstretched pierced, life-giving hands to you; and you turn away - saying, ‘leave me, alone.’
