Selwyn presents three steps that we can take, when we find ourselves experiencing a sense of despair.

“First, we must be willing to acknowledge our feelings (having identified the type of feeling).

Second, talk to God about it – we should honestly express our feelings, but combine with them our convictions concerning the Lord’s deliverances in times past.

Third, undertstand and accept the fact that we live in a sinful world where not all our expectations will be met, not all relationships succeed, and not all hopes realised.  … Accepting that (‘there is something wrong with everything’) and understanding it, is a vital key.”

There are some who teach that our lives here on earth can be full of prosperity and good health if we have enough faith. Yet, Scripture does not support such a view. For example, anyone who carefully reads Paul’s letters would soon realise that Paul suffered a lot – yet, he was obviously full of God’s Spirit – Paul rejoiced in his suffering, because he was focused on being an ambassador for Jesus – and he understood that ‘perfection’ was to be found in heaven – not here on earth. Do you agree?
