I’m not sure that I entirely agree with Selwyn. While there is an increasing awareness of environment issues, I don’t think the average person is terribly burdened by the responsibility to do something for rain forests, whales or global warming, and other environmental or ‘good’ issues. It is a core motivation for some – of that, there’s no doubt – but I don’t think these issues weigh heavily on most people.
However, I do agree that the correct focus is our responsibility to God; once our view is firmly fixed on Jesus then all these other issues fall into their correct place. Consequently, I feel that Selwyn’s conclusion captures this view, well: “Our first responsibility is to God. That is where our responsibility starts and also where it ends.”
