I can understand what Selwyn is talking about in today’s study, and I guess the best summary I can come up with, is: that we should de-clutter our lives, that is, remove all that is superfluous and unnecessary.
He writes: “To describe the next spiritual exercise as a discipline may also seem rather strange; it is the disciple of adopting simplicity.” Selwyn goes onto explain what he means, by drawing our attention to the simple, lifestyle of Jesus. In Jesus, “there was no superfluity, no pretence, no useless verbiage, no quibbling or prevaricating. … We can discipline ourselves to be like Jesus and be ‘rich in common sense; in simplicity sublime’. “
Your thoughts on this topic?
I liked the prayer for today: “Simple but sublime Saviour, rid me of all complexity and artifice, that I might be direct and as self-verifying as You were when You were when on this earth. For Your own dear name’s sake. Amen.”
