To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Philippians 1:6 (NIVUK):” being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
I agree with Selwyn – today’s verse should be a great comfort to all followers of Jesus. It’s great to know that God is working with each one of us to complete His good work of salvation.
Selwyn writes: “Paul saw the reality that nothing could successfully work against the plans and purposes of God. … The good work that God began in the lives of the Philippians … was the saving work of grace that began in their lives when they responded in repentant faith to the preaching of the gospel. Of course, the good work the Philippians were doing in supporting Paul’s mission was in itself evidence of the bigger work of grace in their lives.”
God’s never ending work in us, is an expression of His love and as we know from Romans 8:38-39, that nothing can separate us from His perfect love: “I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Consequently, I don’t think that Jesus will leave us wandering aimlessly whenever we take our eyes off Him and follow our own instincts, I believe He will always come alongside of us and lead us back to where we should be – He is always committed to saving us.
