To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Philippians 3:3 (NIVUK): ”For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh – “
I like this part of today’s study: “Trusting Jesus and experiencing the Spirit are the only authentic signs of our being in God’s covenant family. Our trademark is that we put away any confidence in our own abilities but recognise our dependence on God.
As Paul argues, our status before God and our relationship with Him do not depend on any inherited patterns of privilege or achievements of our own piety, but solely on Jesus and the Spirit. We are in God’s covenant family through grace.”
Selwyn has provided us with a good summary of God’s gospel of grace. It’s sad that some Christians appear to fail to comprehend the complete sufficiency of God’s grace; and still strive, in a variety of ways, to earn God’s favour by trying to be ‘good’ people, by doing ‘good’ things.
