To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Philippians 3:13-14 (NIVUK): ”Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Selwyn starts off by saying: “We pause to reflect further on Paul’s powerful testimony concerning his own spiritual desire by focusing on the phrase ‘one thing I do’.
If we are to make spiritual progress our relationship with Jesus becomes our priority and we concentrate on the ‘one thing needed'”
Further on, Selwyn makes a reference to Luke 10:41-42, which reads: ““Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Our Lord is making the point that listening to (and this implies following) His teaching is the highest priority.
The goal of our life is to develop our relationship with Jesus such that it becomes the guiding light in all that we do – it should be the one driving force in all our lives.
