To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation (I’ve added verse 14):
Philippians 3:17 (NIVUK): ”Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.”
Selwyn starts by telling us: ‘At first, the idea of following Paul’s example sounds as daunting as it does attractive. When Paul issued the challenge to imitate him, however, he did not expect this to be done by sheer human effort but by dependence on the grace and power he relied upon, which is equally available to every one of us.
Let us not forget that, once we turn our lives over to Jesus, He supplies all we need (to faithfully follow Him). Keep in mind that Paul is not expecting us to match his gifts or achievements, but his passion for the one thing worth doing with our lives.’
I think, God places us in situations where we can be witnesses to His glory and love and people around us will be prompted to ask us the reason for our faith. Nothing in His spiritual world happens by pure chance – it’s all planned down to the last detail – and we can commit ourselves to being His agents; or, we can withdraw to a comfortable place and watch the opportunities of a lifetime, pass us by. It’s our choice.
