To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Philippians 4:5 (NIVUK): ”Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.”
Selwyn starts by saying: “How reassuring to be reminded that ‘the Lord is near.’ We can take this in two senses. On the one hand, ‘the Lord is near’ in that His second coming is looked for with eager expectation. … At the same time, ‘to live is Christ’ and here and now we can know Jesus’ presence with us.
He concludes with these comforting words: “Let us be glad that we can live confidently in the nearness of the Lord … we can rejoice, forbear and pray because the Lord we love is closer and nearer to us than we think.”
Followers of Jesus experience daily – the nearness of their Lord – His presence is never far from us and He will never abandon us. In John 14:23, we read: “Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.'” How great is it – that when we have a relationship with Jesus and obey His teaching – that God will be at home with us!
