To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
March/April 2016 Issue – Straight from the Heart, ‘I have you in my heart … all of you share God’s grace with me’ Philippians 1:7
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Philippians 4:7 (NIVUK): ”And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Selwyn tells us: ‘Yesterday we considered the challenge of not being anxious about anything and how we can offer prayer with thanksgiving (in all situations, both good and bad). The result of prayer with thanksgiving, says Paul, is that we can experience supernatural peace – the peace and presence of God.
The peace of God is an amazing confidence when everything else is falling apart; this is peace of Galilee in a storm and Gethsemane in crises. So today, whatever is disturbing you, pray with thanksgiving and experience the deep inner peace which the Holy Spirit imparts by whispering to your soul: “I’m here in this with you.”‘
The verse from Philippians that we are looking at today is a very encouraging one. It’s telling us that when we present our requests to God with a thankful heart – thankful, because we trust in the mercy and goodness of Jesus – then the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds from the ravages of anxiety and despair. This outcome is so amazing and unexpected that it’s beyond the understanding of our normal thought processes.
It’s also a verse that has a special meaning for me today, as I found out two days ago, that my current chemotherapy treatment has failed and the cancer is progressing; there are not many options left for me. Consequently, I feel that my future is totally in the hands of Jesus – and, I’m at peace with the presence of His love.
