To Follow Jesus

May/June 2016 Issue – The Presence of God, ‘You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.’ Psalm 16:11
The text set for today’s reading and meditation:
Lamentations 3:22-36 (NIVUK): ”Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.’ The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him. Let him bury his face in the dust – there may yet be hope. Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.
For no one is cast off by the Lord for ever. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.
To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, to deny people their rights before the Most High, to deprive them of justice – would not the Lord see such things?”
I think that Selwyn’s conclusion is very powerful: “For many years, there sat a wooden carving of the word ‘Jesus‘ on top of my TV. When I received the news of my second son’s death, I was overcome with grief. It was hard to pray, at first I was so stunned and shocked, but, as I looked up, I saw the name of Jesus on that carving. His name was the only prayer I could pray – and He became a place of refuge and strength. We should do all that we can do, to remind ourselves of God’s promises and His presence.”
If someone came into your home, would they see much evidence that you have a living relationship with Jesus?
The prayer for today is also very good: “Lord Jesus, help me to begin each day with You, I pray. Drive deep within my soul the truth that You are the most important person in my life, and for that reason my first contact in the morning should be with You. In Your name. Amen.”
The key verse for today, is one worth thinking about – as we live this day out. God’s mercy and compassion will never fail us – He is faithful to all His children.
