To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
July/August 2016 Issue – Seek Me and Live, ‘let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’ Amos 5:24
The text set for today’s reading and meditation (the key verse is highlighted):
Amos 6:12-14 (NIVUK):”Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plough the sea with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness – you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar and say, ‘Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?’
For the Lord God Almighty declares, ‘I will stir up a nation against you, Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Lebo Hamath to the valley of the Arabah.’”
The key thought for today’s study is: “To recognise that the God we serve is awesome in His holiness and desires our holiness first and foremost.”
We respond to His requirement to be holy; as we read in 2 Timothy 1:9 – “He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,”
We also respond this way because we obey His first commandment; to love Jesus with all our heart, mind and strength.
