To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
July/August 2016 Issue – Seek Me and Live, ‘let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’ Amos 5:24
The text set for today’s reading and meditation (the key verse is highlighted):
Amos 7:1-3 (NIVUK):”This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: he was preparing swarms of locusts after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up.
When they had stripped the land clean, I cried out, ‘Sovereign Lord, forgive! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!’ So the Lord relented. ‘This will not happen,’ the Lord said.”
I think the key point raised by Selwyn was: “[It is] better by far to face God’s searching and realistic assessment of our true condition than to continue to hide in the deadly self-deception caused by our sin. If we continue to sin we stay in the darkness but to come out into God’s light is to find life.”
All God’s children have heard these words declared by Jesus: “Go now and leave your life of sin. (John 8:11)” There are no exceptions.
