To Follow Jesus
My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.
July/August 2016 Issue – Seek Me and Live, ‘let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’ Amos 5:24
The text set for today’s reading and meditation (the key verse is highlighted):
Amos 9:2-4 (NIVUK):”Though they dig down to the depths below, from there my hand will take them. Though they climb up to the heavens above, from there I will bring them down.
Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, there I will hunt them down and seize them. Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them. Though they are driven into exile by their enemies, there I will command the sword to slay them.
‘I will keep my eye on them for harm and not for good.’”
Selwyn gives us hope that we are God’s saved people: “With relief, we fugitive rebels can now clasp the ‘horns’ of the cross and thank Jesus for our salvation.”
I think these verses (1 Peter 2:9-10, 24-25 are especially relevant: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. … He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed.’ For ‘you were like sheep going astray,’ but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”
We now can love God with all our heart, mind and spirit – so that we can live a fearless life: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. (1 John 4:18)”
Jesus is amazing!
