The ‘creation hymn’

To Follow Jesus

My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.

July/August 2016 Issue –  Seek Me and Live‘let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’ Amos 5:24

The text set for today’s reading and meditation (the key verse is highlighted):

Amos 9:5-6 (NIVUK):”The Lord, the Lord Almighty – he touches the earth and it melts, and all who live in it mourn; the whole land rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river of Egypt; he builds his lofty palace in the heavens and sets its foundation on the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land – the Lord is his name.”

As Selwyn tells us: “These vivid pictures of a fierce and irrepressible God can only serve to prevent us from trivialising God.”

Our God is Almighty, in His creative powers and He is also unequalled in His power to punish the wicked. In Hebrews 4:13, we read: “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

It would be hard to trivialise God, who is going to determine the status of our eternal life based on our faith in Him and our faithfulness to His teaching and love.
