A king and a priest

To Follow Jesus

My notes on Every Day with Jesus, written by Selwyn Hughes; revised and updated by Mick Brooks, published by CWR.

July/August 2016 Issue –  Seek Me and Live,  ‘let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream’ Amos 5:24

The text set for today’s reading and meditation (the key verse is highlighted):

Amos 9:11 (NIVUK):”‘In that day ‘I will restore David’s fallen shelter – I will repair its broken wall and restore its ruins – and will rebuild it as it used to be, … “

Selwyn reminds us that Amos is letting the Israelites know – that one day God will be seen as a powerful and almighty king with the qualities of a merciful and compassionate high priest.

And in the following verses from the letter to the Hebrews, we read about the fulfilment of this prophecy:- Hebrews 4:15: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin.”

Hebrews 7:26-27: “Such a high priest truly meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.”

We have a truly amazing God!
